There is a longstanding understanding within Japan of six principal furniture-producing regions: Asahikawa, Shizuoka, Takayama, Fuchu, Tokushima and Okawa. Much of the furniture that passes through our hands originates from these areas, each shaped by its own material traditions, climate and approach to craftsmanship.This time, we are introducing a modular sofa from Asahikawa, the northernmost of the six regions. The composition is straightforward: a central armless lounge chair flanked by two matching armchairs, together forming a continuous arrangement of deep leather and richly toned hardwood. Its proportions encourage a particular way of gathering, allowing people to sit comfortably within the rhythm of conversation rather than around it.Produced under Hock, the predecessor to what is now known as Conde House between 1970 and 1993, the sofa reflects a period when Japanese furniture balanced durability, comfort and clarity of form with remarkable confidence.
