Kungyokudo Incense - Nishinjin Mokcho

Japanese incense has been used to purify, cleanse, and unwind for other a thousand years. During this time it has come to be seen as one of the highest quality incense varieties in the world.

In 1594, Riemon Ouno opened Kungyokudo directly across from the Hongwanji Temple in Kyoto to provide incense and medicine to the monks of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha Buddhist school. The incense house is currently led by his 22nd-generation descendant, Kazuo Ouno, and his wife, Chihaya Ouno.

Kungyokudo is the oldest incense producer in Japan.

Nishinjin Mokcho - Drawn in by the sound of the loom, I wandered along the narrow street lined by townhouses, and eventually reached the end of a cobblestone alley where I am pleasantly embraced by a gentle, reminiscent fragrance—the familiar aroma of osmanthus at twilight.
